How Zombies Survive in the Apocalypse-Chapter 250
The LA army led by Ava finished the war without major losses of troops, and riding that momentum, they charged towards Bakersfield.
EL’s stronghold was easily captured as only minimal defense forces remained.
People who had been dragged away by fanatics and living like slaves were all liberated and could form a vigilante group, and they cooperated with the LA army to recover most of Bakersfield, gathering wanderers and junk dealers roaming here and there, and were able to grow into a self-governing entity.
Of course, internal discord continues, but being a smaller city than LA, they should be able to resolve it.
Ava was able to discover Randy’s diary and research records in EL’s stronghold.
In it, it could be seen that Randy himself was one of the researchers studying diseases, and conducted human experiments using fanatics.
Among them, there were research records of human experiments using Fears, and it could also be seen that the final test subject was Randy himself, and that the experiment ended successfully.
The rest were diaries with predictably obvious contents.
From using fanatics and zombies to conquer the western continent, to the vain dream of putting the entire continent under himself
Ava chuckled at the all too obvious content.
According to reports Ava heard, Aiden and Arian did not participate in the raid on EL’s stronghold.
When the battle ended, they returned to inside the LA barrier and cleared out the zombies in the north of the barrier, then went to meet Sadie, they say.
And 6 months have passed.
LA has almost completed recovery to its former territory.
Vaccines were administered to soldiers as a priority, and then the military unhesitatingly swept away zombies and focused on territorial recovery.
Through continuous exchange of supplies and troops with Bakersfield’s self-governing entity, the restoration of the highway connecting the two cities was also completed.
In this way, the western part of the American continent was slowly but surely regaining its former civilization.
The LA government officially began distributing vaccines for the zombie virus.
They announced throughout LA that vaccine injections are possible once every two weeks at locations provided by each department.
The first round of vaccinations started with children.
Many children inside the LA barrier received the vaccine, and unless something major happens, everyone including LA will be provided with an environment where they can receive the vaccine, giving all citizens hope.
Aiden, Arian, and Sadie are living in a quiet residential area in La Mirada, LA.
Thanks to the goodwill of the city council and Commander Ava, they were able to receive a house that wasn’t too damaged.
They don’t know who the previous owner was, but the interior was clean, sufficient for the three to live in.
It will take a long time for the destroyed civilization to return to its previous level.
For the residential area in La Mirada where they and several others came to live, Aiden hung an old sign that said "Hospital".
And Arian and Sadie asked Ava for an abandoned house next to Aiden’s hospital and established a small orphanage for children who lost their parents.
And time passed, 2 years went by.
"Kids! It’s lunchtime!"
Sadie called the children playing in the yard.
The children seemed excited and jumped up and down as they headed to the living room with Sadie.
While the children sitting at the big table were looking forward to today’s lunch with shining eyes, Arian brought various dishes from the kitchen to the living room.
"Yuck! Did Teacher Arian cook?"
"Hey! What do you mean ’yuck’! Tom?! What does that mean?"
"But Teacher Arian’s cooking is terrible!"
""That’s right, that’s right!""
As the children chanted in unison, Arian’s eyebrow twitched.
"Just eat it!"
Bang!
Arian roughly put down the food and hurriedly distributed it onto plates.
Sadie, watching this scene, seemed to have a hard time holding back her laughter, covering her mouth and giggling.
"Sadie?"
"Yes? Me?"
"Don’t laugh..."
"Kik! Pffft! Hahaha!"
When Sadie finally burst out laughing unable to hold it in, all the children laughed together.
All the children seemed excited and laughed together.
Seeing everyone laughing brightly, Arian also seemed to be in a good mood, a smile spreading across her face.
And so passed a lunchtime that was painful for the mouth but happy for the heart.
It became the children’s nap time, and when the children fell asleep, Sadie came out to the yard with Arian to hang laundry.
"It’s peaceful."
Arian spoke to Sadie.
"It is, even three years ago, I couldn’t have imagined living like this."
"That’s right, who would have thought I’d be living while taking care of kids?"
The two looked at each other and smiled softly.
"By the way, isn’t it about time he should arrive?"
Sadie asked Arian.
"Is that so? Since he’s moving alone, he should have arrived by now and then some."
"I wanted to go too, it’s a shame..."
"Let’s go together next time for sure, the east is still dangerous too."
Sadie was full of regret.
"Yes, let’s all go together for sure! Mom will like it too."
Sadie smiled brightly.
At that moment, a pleasant warm breeze blew.
The sky was clear, and the sunlight was beautiful.
Arian no longer held a knife in her hand except when cooking.
Her self that came to this world was no longer a weapon of war.
Not a life where she was pointed at by others and threatened for her life.
She was able to live a life laughing happily with Sadie and the orphanage children.
Arian looked at Sadie’s smile and savored the peace.
It wasn’t entirely easy for Aiden to traverse from the west to the east, but he was able to arrive in New York without major danger.
After settling in LA, he thought he would never have occasion to come here again.
New York had become even more desolate.
New York, which had become worse than a ghost town, was dominated by even more zombies than before Aiden left.
No wanderers, no looters, no junk dealers, no signs of any people could be found.
As soon as Aiden arrived in New York, he took off his helmet.
Because the number of zombies was far more than Aiden expected, it was unavoidable if he wanted to reach the laboratory comfortably.
Aiden arrived at the laboratory where he had buried Jane.
The laboratory was more severely destroyed than before, and the interior was also full of zombies.
Aiden passed through the smashed iron door and arrived at where he had buried Jane.
"Jane. I’m back."
Aiden greeted Jane’s grave briefly.
"I didn’t think I’d come back here..."
Aiden knelt down and calmly began to talk about what had happened in the meantime.
From the story of how he became a zombie but came back to life with reason, to when he was doing junk dealing work in Pittsburgh, meeting Diana and Sadie, then meeting Arian, and the process of taking Sadie to LA at Diana’s request.
He told all of it to Jane calmly and slowly.
"Now, I think I have to go back, family is waiting. I don’t know how long it will take, but when everything gets better and is resolved, I’ll come back then with the family. And then I’ll move you to a better place, not a place like this."
Aiden told Jane those words, got up, looked at the laboratory and went inside.
It seemed wanderers had been living there for several years, as various trash was scattered about making it even more of a mess, and zombies were loitering around, glancing at Aiden.
"I should clean up a bit before going back."
Aiden quietly drew the dagger from his waist.
He dealt with zombies as he saw them from the first floor and threw their corpses outside.
And when he went up to the second floor, there were even more traces of people living there.
Since he couldn’t find any trace of how it was when he lived there with Jane, he just killed the zombies one by one, throwing the corpses out the broken windows, and headed to the third floor.
The third floor was where the laboratory where he researched the vaccine with Jane was, but this place was also almost completely destroyed with no trace of how it was then.
As he dealt with the remaining zombies, Aiden entered the research lab that Jane mainly used and there discovered Jane’s necklace-type name tag.
"This is..."
Aiden quietly looked at Jane’s name tag.
Jane’s photo remained on the faded name tag.
"It’s been a while."
Aiden, who had been quietly looking at Jane’s face, put the name tag around his neck.
After leaving the lab and dealing with all the remaining zombies on the third floor, Aiden went up to the roof.
And, sitting on the railing of the roof, he looked at the devastated view of New York.
"I should go back now, to Sadie and Arian."
Just as he was about to get up, Aiden could see something moving in the third-floor window of a high-rise building near the laboratory.
"A zombie? No, that movement is human. Are there still survivors in this terrible place?"
Aiden immediately left the laboratory and headed towards the building, dealing with visible zombies one by one.
As Aiden entered the first floor of the building, he cleared out all the zombies on the first floor, thinking of the possibility of having to bring out people.
And he immediately went up to the third floor.
’An office?’
Aiden entered the office as quietly as possible, intentionally not making any sound.
At first glance, the interior of the office was just a mess, but to Aiden’s eye, there were traces of people living there.
Just in case, Aiden took out the helmet from his backpack and put it on deeply.
As Aiden scanned the office, he found a place labeled "Conference Room" and carefully opened the door.
Then,
"S-stop! I’ll shoot if you move!"
Aiden raised both hands, showing he had no intention of attacking, and looked at the figure who shouted at him.
A middle-aged man who looked to be in his 40s or 50s was holding a pistol aimed at Aiden with shaking hands, and behind him was a small boy who looked to be in his teens lying on the floor, breathing heavily.
"I have no intention of harming or looting."
"You expect me to believe that?"
The middle-aged man distrusted Aiden’s words and observed him closely.
Aiden also observed the middle-aged man and the boy behind him closely, and spoke carefully.
"If I intended to harm you, I wouldn’t be doing this. By the way, is the child sick?"
"Who on earth are you? Why are you here?"
"Why don’t you lower that gun first and we talk, I’ll say it again, I have no intention of harming you."
As Aiden kept speaking calmly, the middle-aged man slowly lowered his gun.
Confirming that the middle-aged man had lowered his gun, Aiden approached the two, knelt down and said.
"My name is Aiden Lee. I’m a junk... no, a doctor."
Aiden showed the doctor’s name tag hanging around his neck, and reaching out his hand to the middle-aged man, said.
"Won’t you come with me to LA?"
