Chapter 421: Chapter 423: Something Is Wrong_1

As Li Qiao came out of the dormitory building, she ran into Xue Sufen, who took the initiative to greet her, "Li Qiao, are you heading to class?"

Li Qiao, seeing that Xue Sufen had recently been behaving herself and was tight-lipped, was willing to make small talk, "Yeah, are you looking for Professor Xue?"

"I’m looking for my aunt. Grandma said she wasn’t feeling well. There’s no one in the clinic, so I came to see if she’s in my uncle’s dorm."

Li Qiao made an acknowledging sound, thinking it was unlikely; since Nan Chuyi had gotten her medical practice license, she often went out to volunteer, and today was probably no exception.

She was about to leave when Xue Sufen said, "I thought I heard your son crying when I was coming here."

"What? You can hear my son crying from your place that far away?"

"I might have heard wrong, maybe."

Li Qiao felt uneasy and didn’t want to go to class anymore; she skipped class and biked home at top speed.

Upon entering the courtyard, she heard Jin Daxue’s voice.

She rushed into the house and immediately looked toward the baby cot. Qin Baby and Feng Yaozu were inside, sleeping soundly, which reassured her somewhat.

Old Mrs. Qin: "Qiaoqiao, you’re back, huh? Don’t you have class this afternoon?"

Li Qiao hummed a relaxed yeah.

Jin Daxue complained, "You’ve come back just at the right time. Look what your son did to my son’s face; it’s all scratched up. My son was crying so hard, I just managed to console him."

Li Qiao looked closely and saw two scratch marks on Feng Yaozu’s face, but they weren’t very noticeable.

At that moment, Qin Baby opened his eyes, looked startled to see Li Qiao, and then pouted, "Mama, wuu wuu... "

"Hey, Baby, don’t cry, Mama’s here."

Jin Daxue: "And look at him, acting all wronged. We’re the ones who got scratched and cried, yet we haven’t done anything to him."

Old Mrs. Qin couldn’t help but say, "I told you this morning, our little Yunye doesn’t like strangers touching him. You insisted on putting Yao next to him. Your child is bigger by one size and can sit; of course, mine would be scared. Out of fear, acting out is a subconscious action, not deliberate."

Li Qiao had previously thought Daxue was a bit dramatic but decent. After having a child, why had she become increasingly unreasonable?

Jin Daxue: "You should trim your child’s nails."

Mrs. Tao: "I just trimmed them this morning." Otherwise, your child’s face would have deeper marks.

After calming down Qin Baby’s emotions, Li Qiao prepared to put him back in the baby cot. He grabbed onto the sweater at her chest with both hands and pulled his legs up, refusing to lie down, so she had to pick him up again.

Qin Baby pointed his little hand outside.

Li Qiao understood that he didn’t want to stay at home. She had been busy with studies and cases lately, hardly having any days off, and it had been a while since they last saw little Jiayue.

She said, "Do you need to pee? I’m about to put you in warm clothes, and it won’t be convenient for you to go pee later."

Qin Baby waved his hand.

Li Qiao smiled and said, "If you don’t need to go, I’ll dress you. But you must remind me one minute before you want to pee."

Qin Baby hummed an acknowledgment.

"Mrs. Tao, I’ll take care of the children this afternoon. You can go home and rest."

Mrs. Tao: "I’ll tidy up the house a bit first."

"Alright, thanks for the trouble."

Mrs. Tao said smilingly, "Not at all." She promptly came forward to help pack up the bottles, milk powder, and diapers.

Jin Daxue asked, "Where are you taking the child in this freezing weather? Aren’t you afraid he’ll catch a cold?"

"It’s not cold in the car, do as you please," Li Qiao said as she took the bag from Mrs. Tao and told Old Mrs. Qin, "Grandma, I’m going to Jiayue’s place. I’ll be back late."

"Alright, be careful on the road."

Li Qiao responded as she timed her arrival at the nearby minibus stop. The bus came within a minute of her waiting.

She had to transfer buses midway. After she got off, she covered the baby’s head with her cape.

A child can’t move much when dressed in layers.

He peeked outside through the gaps in the cape.

"Mama."

"Hmm?" Li Qiao lifted part of the cape and said softly, "Are you getting anxious because you can’t see outside?"

Qin Baby hummed again.

Li Qiao: "Your eyes are delicate; the strong wind outside will make you uncomfortable if dirt gets blown in. Be patient, the bus will arrive soon."

She covered the child’s head with her cloak, when a crisp voice came through.

"Li Qiao!"

It was Cao Liwan.

Li Qiao had just turned around when the other party said, "Your child?"

Li Qiao didn’t respond.

Cao Liwan said, "Aren’t you still in school? You’ve had a child already, not studying anymore?"

"Is it any of your business?" Li Qiao saw the bus coming about ten meters away, took a few steps forward, and the bus stopped right in front of her and opened its doors. She boarded with the child in her arms.

Cao Liwan watched the closing doors of the bus and decided to go back to school to inquire.

Had Li Qiao taken a leave of absence from school, and if not, she would make sure she did!

......

In the city, the bus was crowded, and there were no seats left. Li Qiao leaned against a nearby seat, standing.

The conductor asked passengers to give up their seats.

No one budged.

Li Qiao smiled and said, "I’ll be getting off soon, no need to sit, thank you." She lifted the cloak from the child.

A passenger standing by said, "This girl is so pretty, as white as you."

Li Qiao: "We have a boy."

"So beautiful, he won’t have trouble finding a wife when he grows up."

This remark caught the attention of a man in the back row. His gaze shifted from the window to Li Qiao, his eyes suddenly brightened, and after a once-over, he stood up and said, "Young lady, come sit here with me. It’s not convenient for you to stand with a child."

Li Qiao’s gaze shifted. The young man, about thirty years old, fairly good-looking and dressed rather shabbily, was sizing her up. She felt uncomfortable but still responded politely, "No need, I’ll be arriving shortly."

After saying that, Li Qiao looked down to soothe the child.

The young man promptly squeezed through and pulled Li Qiao towards the seat.

Qin Baby made a gulping sound, and Li Qiao thought his throat might be uncomfortable. Right as she was about to ask, he spit a mouthful of saliva onto the young man’s face.

The surrounding people looked at each other, bewildered.

Li Qiao was shocked herself; the accuracy of that spit was astounding.

Had he started practicing spitting saliva a couple of days ago when he was only sputtering?

The young man’s face darkened as he wiped the saliva off.

Li Qiao: "I’m sorry, my child might have seen you trying to pull me and feared I’d be at a disadvantage, so he did that."

"That’s nonsense. Can a child so small understand such things?"

As they spoke, the bus arrived at the stop.

Li Qiao squeezed off the bus.

The young man followed her off: "Young lady, where do you live? I’ll walk you."

"No need, I’m almost there." Li Qiao hurried towards the family compound.

She also sensed something wasn’t right.

Where there’s unwarranted kindness, there’s often malice or theft.

This person must be up to no good.

It was cold, few people were on the road, and the young man, looking around, decided to run after Li Qiao, preparing to reach out and grab her.

Li Qiao was on her guard, twisted her body to the side to dodge the young man’s attempt, and shouted for help towards the direction of the family compound.

The doorkeeper poked his head out: "What’s going on?"

The young man said, "She’s my wife; we’re having an argument."

The doorkeeper recognized Li Qiao at this time. Sir Shangguan had personally instructed him not to stop her the next time she came, and he had seen the man she was with before — striking features that left a deep impression, definitely not the man before him now. He pulled out a gun, rushed forward, and with the butt of the gun struck the man who was grabbing Li Qiao, causing his forehead to bleed, and pinned him down.
