Chapter 377: Chapter 379: Recruited_1

A sentence made Xun Dong look at the man again, "You seem to know quite a bit." Most people, even when an investigation doesn’t involve them, would cooperate honestly; those who don’t cooperate often have something to hide.

How had he not noticed that before?

His colleague beside him took out some identification: "It’s the responsibility and duty of the public to cooperate with the police investigation. If anyone wants to obstruct, I can take them to the office for a good chat."

Upon hearing this, everyone quickly dispersed.

The pregnant woman also gave the man a meaningful glance.

The man finally left, albeit reluctantly, still saying at the doorway, "If anything goes missing in my house, I’m going to hold you lot accountable."

Xun Dong ignored him and handed Li Qiao a pair of white gloves.

Once Li Qiao had put them on, she looked around.

With the people gone, the room seemed much brighter. But it was very messy, with melon seed shells, peanut shells, and bottle caps on the floor.

Li Qiao touched the table and the white gloves turned black.

She shook her hands in disgust and walked a couple of steps toward the kitchen, saying, "Don’t you think it’s very cold in this house?"

Qin Jin: "I feel it too, chilly and drafty, and there’s a strange smell, like chicken soup that hasn’t been cleaned properly, a combination of fishy and foul odors."

Xun Dong sniffed: "How come I didn’t smell it?"

"Neither did I."

"Your noses aren’t as perceptive as mine." Qin Jin unwound the scarf from around his neck and wrapped it around Li Qiao’s neck—the room was indeed cold.

He went on: "Look at how cluttered this place is, how can we find any clues? Besides, after so many days, any real clues would have been dealt with." He pushed open the doors to the other two closed rooms. They were filled with clutter everywhere. He said, "This is messier than when I was single. Look at this floor, dark and dingy. These are floor tiles, the nice house has been completely trashed, but this room at least looks like it’s inhabitable..."

The relentless chatter of Qin Jin caught Li Qiao’s attention, and she stepped forward for a closer look.

The house had no bathroom; right upon entering was the living room, with two bedrooms adjacent to it.

One room was filled with clutter; the floor and walls were grimy.

The other room’s floor was as clean as new, the walls relatively clean.

Xun Dong observed the surroundings and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. "Li Qiao, do you find anything?"

"No," Li Qiao looked at the two rooms and said, "But something feels a bit off."

She thought of her own rented little room.

She considered herself to be fairly clean, but the wall above the desk where she often sat—because Qin Jin used to solve problems there frequently—the ink would splatter over time.

At first, she tried to clean it up, but eventually she gave up; therefore, the wall opposite that spot was dirty.

Yet this family, despite their slovenly ways, had such a neat sleeping area; it felt eerie.

She shared her suspicions with Xun Dong. "Shouldn’t a frequently used place be dirty? It can only be clean if it’s not being used."

Xun Dong had an epiphany: "So, you’re saying the cluttered space is where people used to live."

Li Qiao: "Do you think we’ll find something if we move these items away?"

Xun Dong was excited: "Qin Jin, could you and Lin move some of this stuff?"

Qin Jin: "Sure!"

The homeowners and the people outside were peeping at the door; seeing Qin Jin and Lin moving things, they grew anxious: "Why are you moving our stuff?"

The man even rushed into the kitchen to grab a knife and held it towards Qin Jin and Lin, warning them to stop.

Qin Jin kicked the kitchen knife out of the man’s hand with one foot, and Lin immediately tackled him to the ground, pulling out handcuffs to slap on the man—all in the blink of an eye.

The pregnant woman ran in and started hitting Lin. "What are you doing, what are you doing..."

Xun Dong stepped in to restrain her.

The crowd outside loved the commotion and didn’t mind if things escalated.

"The police are hitting people..."

Qin Jin picked up the kitchen knife and threw it, sticking it in the door; the people outside were immediately silenced.

The couple inside quieted down as well.

Xun Dong instructed Lin to first take the woman’s husband inside and call two more people to come over; they needed to conduct a thorough search.

Lin twisted the man’s arm and led him away.

The pregnant woman panicked, "I’ll confess, I’ll confess, it was me who did it, it has nothing to do with my partner; please let him go."

As soon as the woman spoke.

Xun Dong could no longer stay put; he ordered Li Qiao and Qin Jin to guard the scene, and then, along with Lin, they forcefully took the person back.

The onlookers were still at the door, each displaying a look of relief mixed with horror.

Qin Jin crouched by the door to prevent bystanders from entering, while Li Qiao slowly and methodically cleaned up clutter. Coming across a fertilizer bag that was bulging at the side of the wall, with dried bloodstains that had turned black underneath, she realized what it was and dared not touch it. She left the room and returned to Qin Jin’s side.

"Did you finish tidying up? Did you find anything?"

Li Qiao spoke without betraying any emotion, "I haven’t found anything for now; let’s just wait for Director Xun here."

Neighbors near the door inquired about the situation.

"Did this couple really commit murder?"

"Without any feud or reason, that can’t be right? I think you’ve made a mistake; tormenting people like this, wait until you have to explain yourselves."

"....."

Li Qiao ignored them entirely.

About an hour passed.

Xun Dong finally returned with others, carrying a toolbox with him.

His colleagues brought with them a large, black hemp bag.

Li Qiao guessed that the person had confessed and they had brought tools over to collect evidence, and to also take away that package.

After entering the room, Xun Dong asked, "Did you clean up?"

Li Qiao replied, "Yeah, I didn’t dare to look. I don’t know if it’s what I’m thinking; you handle it." She and Qin Jin stood at the door.

Before long, two colleagues ran out to vomit.

Qin Jin asked, "Is it really that horrifying?" He stepped inside, then a second later ran out clinging to Li Qiao, saying his legs were weak: "That scared me to death." He had been through a lot, even seen bandits, but even now couldn’t help but be shocked, finding the scene more gory than what he had read about in books.

Li Qiao, while grieving for the young girl’s plight, felt a bit of darkness lift from her heart at his words and unwittingly smiled, "You get scared too?"

Qin Jin replied, "How could I not be scared?" His heart pounded and his hair stood on end, "Let’s go home so I don’t scare you."

"I didn’t see anything, so I’m still okay."

Qin Jin said, "As for that murderous couple, why would they need to torture someone like that after killing them?"

Li Qiao speculated, "Probably to make disposal easier, emptying the body’s insides to slow down decomposition. They could carry out an arm or a leg in a bag every day unnoticed. If it weren’t for the holiday when all the neighbors were off work and at home, they might not have dared to make much noise and the evidence might have been destroyed long ago."

Xun Dong finished collecting evidence and came out with his colleagues.

"Li Qiao, you two go home first; I’ll find you when I’m free," Xun Dong said.

Li Qiao replied, "Okay, but I’m planning to return to Beijing the day after tomorrow, so it’s better not to look for me."

Xun Dong said, "Going back to Beijing the day after tomorrow? I was thinking of inviting you for a meal."

Qin Jin interjected, "For the next two days, I doubt we’ll have much appetite." He hadn’t thrown up, but he was feeling queasy.

Xun Dong’s lips curled in a nearly imperceptible smile, "Another time, then, when we’re free."

"Okay."

Xun Dong left.

Li Qiao and Qin Jin went straight home. Li Qiao had thought about visiting the courtyard house but decided against it, considering its eerie chill and her lack of intention to go.

Upon arriving home, Old Mrs. Qin inquired about the situation.

Qin Jin described the ordeal vividly and at length.

After understanding the situation, Old Mrs. Qin exclaimed in disbelief, "The family must be heartbroken. Why would that couple torture the girl like that?"
