"My wife had passed away a year ago. She was ambushed by bandits on her way back from her mother's home and was… killed along with the rest of the guards protecting her. We buried her in the family cemetery."

Noah raised an eyebrow at the words. He nodded at the man before looking around the room. He slowly walked up to a wooden crate placed on the opposite side of the bed.

The crate had metal hinges and silver nails stabbed into the twin dragons made of gold pinned on each side of the lock.

"This belonged to my wife. She brought it with her when we married." Looking at the box, Gu Chen spoke with a nostalgic look on his face. He looked like someone who dearly loved his wife and could not get over her death. "This is the last thing of hers that is left…"

"I am sorry…" Noah's apology confused the man, but the next second he saw him waving his hand, and a yellow paper became visible, still stuck on the crate. Once it became visible, the paper caught on fire and was burnt to ashes.

Crack!

Slowly, the handle lifted by itself, creating an eerie sound that sent shivers down the spine of the listeners. Once the lid of the crate was lifted, a stairway that Noah was getting very familiar with came into sight.

"Everything lies beyond this place." Noah looked up at the city lord. He gave the man the choice to make. "Are you sure you want to come and see everything through with us?"

Gu Chen looked at the box with a dazed look and only raised his head when he heard Noah's question. "I am the city lord and the person who should have known about the things that happened to those poor people.

I may have failed before, but I will see it through that those people get the justice they deserve."

Noah could see the cold determination in his eyes.

"Very well." He agreed before turning towards his son. "You want to come alone as well?"

Gu Ren jerked back in fright seeing Noah looking at him and forced a smile. "Can I not come?"

Noah shrugged, "Up to you. But you are not going to leave this room or tell anyone what is happening here until we come back."

Gu Chen was a bit disappointed by his son's behavior but merely shook his head.

Xin Yan took the lead and stepped into the crate; step by step, she disappeared from their sight. The next to enter after her was Gu Chen with Noah in the back.

The stairs were not as long as the ones he had encountered before, so they arrived at the bottom one in no time.

Gu Chen looked around, but the entire place was enshrouded in darkness, and he could see nothing but the stairs and the things in a three-foot radius around him.

Then all of a sudden….

Gu Chen could finally see something in the distance. It was a faint silver glow. He could feel his heart beating.

Ba-dump! Ba-dump!

Each beat echoing in his ears, the qi in his body also started to feel a bit agitated as if something was riling it.

"Stay calm; this is a place of sin." Noah whispered to him from the side before he and Xin Yan started walking towards the glow. "One wrong move will make you lose yourself to the darkness."

His words echoed in Gu Chen's mind. Gulping a mouthful of saliva, he followed after Noah. The silver glow in the distance widened the closer they got to it.

Soon he could make out that the glow did not belong to a single thing, but it was made of several sparks, and a single word appeared in his mind.

And indeed this was the very thing Noah had told him about. They were standing before the very core of the array formation, the Demonic Guardian Array!

"Each and every one of them is a soul?" Looking at the illusionary figures that looked like a faded image of a person, Gu Chen muttered in shock.

There were a total of 109 souls floating before him, and all but nine of them seemed to have even the slightest bit of spark. The air around the souls seemed to be covered in red mist; they could see nothing beyond the mist except the souls themselves.

His whisper seemed to have caught their attention as all of them looked straight at him once he spoke.

"Those nine souls…" Xin Yan whispered while Noah nodded in confirmation. "Each one of them has a talent for cultivation. No matter how small it is, the last one even has a decent cultivation".

That person was none other than the servant who sacrificed himself before them. His eyes had the most glow and consciousness. As soon as he saw them, his face turned ugly.

Twisting into something… demonic!

He screamed like a banshee, as did the other eight souls like it. It may have been a cry of attack, but once the souls took a step forward, all of them froze.

Noah was looking at them coldly! His eyes had gained a green ring around the iris, giving him a deadly vibe.

All the souls except the servant's froze before one by one they knelt before Noah. Unlike the others, the servant's soul was obliterated into wisps of dark glitter.

"What…" Gu Chen, who was ready to fight, now looked at the scene with awe and confusion. He turned to Noah and saw even Xin Yan had a similar expression on her face, but it returned to normal as soon as it appeared, replaced with reverence and…obsession!

"I am sorry that you all had to go through this, but now you all can pass on. I relieve you of your bond to the earthly realm." Noah looked at each one of them and waved his hands.

Their souls glow ominously; chains that were wrapped around their bodies appeared in sight before they were crushed into nothingness. A portal, similar to the one that appeared at the death of Ah Wei, presented itself before them.

The eyes of the souls gained their spark as they stood up from the ground. Child, woman, man, and even old people. All of them bowed to Noah in gratitude before stepping through the portal.

Once everyone disappeared into the portal, it started to close, and Noah heard a faint sound that brought a faint smile to his face.

Thank you, my savior…

With the souls gone, the array broke apart, and the mist started to disappear. The sight beyond the barrier started to reveal itself. Noah's smile started to disappear, and coldness matching Xin Yan's appeared on his face.

Gu Chen's eyes widened with shock and… despair.
