736: 722 Enemy Occupied Area (Part 2)
Dix stepped out of the United Nations General Assembly hall, watching his service delegate hurriedly leave by car and shook his head.
Not yet thirty years old, Dix was a cryptographic secretary for the United States’ delegation at the UN General Assembly.
At this time, the United Nations General Assembly was essentially the highest decision-making organ of Earth’s autonomous government.
Although Earth had effectively unified, boasting a tariff-free economic trade system and using the same Iridium Star Currency (previously Star Alliance Currency), with a uniform set of citizen treatment standards, nominally, each country’s government was still retained.
In an era where politics were largely executed by AI and governments had very little actual work to do, government officials on Earth were essentially a privileged class.
Due to strong productivity and Earth’s civilization upgrading too quickly, these officials were far less rational than those from Iridium Star, and thus, Earth saw many unreasonable projects and constructions; many were halted only after their shortcomings became apparent.
But for the officials of various countries, they could do whatever outrageous things they wanted, safe in the knowledge that production capacity was sufficient, and if unused, it merely remained idle.
At this stage, Earth provided only military recruits, no longer had any obligations towards the United Empire, and with no tax transfers, chaos abounded.
In the era of the Iridium Star United Empire, the United Nations General Assembly was revived and became the platform for deciding major policies for Earth as a whole.
Earth, with its population of ten billion, had more than eleven hundred representatives, allocated based on population ratios and regional divisions.
Mr.
Dix’s representative was one from the United States, and along with China and India, the US was among the most influential forces in the United Nations General Assembly.
The United States also had a host of former Western allies, so its presence was substantial.
On one side of the corridor, he saw a Chinese cryptographic secretary, a well-acquainted colleague, Qiu Chengxiang, with a similar expression on his face.
“How about it, go for a drink first?” Dix asked.
Qiu Chengxiang, with his suit jacket slung over his shoulder, replied, “Let’s go.”
The two secretaries headed to a small bar outside the convention center, where the lighting was dim and privacy was excellent.
As Dix settled down and received his first beer, he started, “The United Empire is pushing back.”
Qiu Chengxiang’s face wore a mocking expression, “Yes, so the bigwigs are very nervous now, racking their brains on how to shift the blame.
Do you know what my boss said?
He thought the Chancellor would forgive everyone, because back then the situation was tense, and surrendering to the Galaxy Force to safeguard the lives of Earth’s people was rational and proper, and the Chancellor should thank the UN General Assembly for securing everyone’s safety.”
Dix took a large gulp of beer, wiped the foam from his mouth, and laughed sarcastically, “That’s ridiculous, Earth didn’t resist at all, unlike Zaifu Star or Cangming Star, even Hanchi Star where hardly anybody knew what was going on, there were resistance efforts.
Earth just watched passively as two powers transferred ownership, right?”
Qiu Chengxiang, feeling low, barely drank his drink and already seemed tipsy, “That’s why Earthlings don’t deserve to be part of a high-level civilization, nor do they deserve to be citizens of the Iridium Star United Empire.”
Dix sighed and said, “Originally, there were very few people on Earth who identified with the Iridium Star United Empire and Emperor Bai Zhongqi.
Although it might sound terrible to say this, looking at the current state of Earth, I somewhat resent Bai Zhongqi.
His generosity verged on foolishness, letting Earth do nothing and leap into a high-level civilization like a toddler holding a fortune, utterly clueless.
Or perhaps, he should have purged Earth, leaving only those as blindly loyal to the Iridium Star United Empire as the Iridians themselves.
Such an Earth might not have been the original Earth, but at the very least, it wouldn’t be as awkward as it is now.”
Qiu Chengxiang didn’t argue with Dix’s point but silently continued drinking, “A civilization shouldn’t have two homeworlds, two mainstream ideas.
Earth, from the Star Alliance Era, was doomed from the start, but everyone was living in a beautiful material utopia, no one cared about other things.
Indeed, Earth’s future had already been stifled.
Perhaps without the rise of the Iridium Star Chancellor, Earth might have slowly evolved within the isolated Danlu Interstellar Cloud, gradually reaching out to Emerald Sea Star, Lieque Star, ultimately becoming a primitive and then a mid-level civilization.
Nations on Earth might rise and fall, but Earth’s civilization would have continued.
Now?
No one remembers what Earth’s civilization was; it’s only Bai Zhongqi’s Iridium Star.
Earth is like one of Bai Zhongqi’s privately cherished items with special sentiments, soulless.”
Dix laughed mockingly again, “So we betrayed him.”
The two drank from their cups, both consumed by indignation, as if all the faults lay with Bai Zhongqi, who truly seemed to be the prime culprit.
Qiu Chengxiang suddenly said, “My older brother contacted me earlier.” freewēbnoveℓ.com
Dix sobered up a bit upon hearing this, aware that Qiu Chengxiang’s brother had left Earth many years ago.
After the unification under the Iridium Star United Empire, he had been working in the Administrative Institute, and was considered part of the Chancellor’s system.
After the Galaxy military took over Earth, they controlled the local manufacturing and military resources, but it was hard to instantly shut down all intelligent devices and communication methods.
So, in fact, people on Earth were still able to access information from the outside world.
“What did he say?”
Qiu Chengxiang spoke nonchalantly, “He just scolded me.
Those who left Earth no longer consider themselves of Earth.
My brother is thoroughly an Iridium Star person now, always speaking of the Chancellor and the United Empire; he said he is ashamed of me.”
Dix, not particularly concerned with his family matters, asked with some concern, “Did he mention how the Chancellor plans to deal with Earth?”
“Not at all.”
Dix sighed in disappointment.
As the two had their fill of sorrowful drinks and were leaving the pub, a message came through on their smart devices.
“The Galaxy military has begun to capture some of the Earth’s government officials, taking them away with them.
Important documents, technology, and even artifacts from Earth are being gathered and removed by the Galaxy military.”
Qiu Chengxiang felt a bit of schadenfreude, “Our bosses were taken away, which is great; no need to work ourselves to death and still have to put up with their attitudes.”
Dix felt some alarm, “The Galactic Empire is covering its tracks.
They are taking these key individuals who hold important information, which could later be used to understand more about Iridium Star.
If they’re also taking Iridium Star’s important technologies, then Iridium Star might face significant troubles ahead.”
Qiu Chengxiang understood better, “Nonsense, all important technologies are managed by Iridium Star’s Class S AI, which definitely wiped all crucial technical data before the Galaxy military arrived.
Even now, the things they are taking are altered.”
Both stared at the sky tinted with a sunset glow, wondering where exactly the future of Earth lay.
