Chapter 42: Planet quake

It seemed anticlimactic.

The device landed...

Julian watched it in slow motion.

He held Rehul very tight and flew upwards a bit.

Boom!

It exploded.

But then, it didn’t explode fire or anything flamy; instead, it exploded a seismic invincible flame.

That instant, it jerked all the monsters off their feet.

A seismic explosion.

Rippling through the air, it sunk down like it had a mind of its own.

It was even enough to shake Julian and Rehul a bit in the air.

The ground split open with a sharp sound, small particles of the rocks jerking upwards.

The floating planet seemed to tilt sideways a little bit, jerking the steel monsters sideways.

Some tried to escape and fly upwards, but they just couldn’t. Gravity weighed them down.

Julian stared in surprise.

With the way it seemed to be going, it looked like nothing would remain of the planet anymore.

’Would it explode?’

Where would they now go to?

The ground continued to split open, and with each splitting, it sunk someone inside.

Julian watched as the monsters sunk inside.

The ground was swallowing them.

Due to the unsteadiness, some tried to run, to get away and brace themselves to fly up.

But the ground wouldn’t let it. It swallowed them all.

So this was a floating planet. Well, if it was ’floating,’ it would mean that it had no clouds in the sky. When Julian looked up, he ought to be seeing space.

But then, this seemed to be different. When he looked up, instead of seeing space, he saw a misty cloud enveloping the planet.

---

A minute later, Julian was zooming forward with Rehul well held in his hands.

The floating was about to sink completely. But what Julian thought was:

Had he made a mistake?

He was just trying to save his life, and now this was happening.

He had been expecting a small quake and not something as seismic as that.

As he flew further up ahead, he saw the same scene.

The ground splitting. No steel monsters were here, but then, the caves were starting to sink.

Julian squinted his eyes, and far ahead, he could see a large expanse which seemed to expand.

Julian thought of the possibilities. By floating, does it mean lands forming a single planet?

The expanse of land he saw going back was divided by a large space of nothing.

Julian pushed his speed to be even faster.

The floating planet he was on would soon be only a debris, and nothing would remain.

He plunged, looking downwards. All steel monsters were now sunk or shaken way too much they were dead. He felt shaken himself in the sky, but he persisted, knowing that if he was to be shaken to fall, that would be the end for him.

A much wider line stretched through the middle of the planet, splitting caves into half.

Julian watched it and wondered what sort of tech powered the quaking device that caused a damage as brutal as this.

One that literally just split a planet in half.

Julian was almost at the other side.

He was in the air, so he shouldn’t panic?

But then, how?

He ought to be panicking because if this line that was unzipping this land should get to the end of it, the planet (or land rather) would sink, and the force of the fall could dabble with gravity, reel him, make him lose balance, and then fall him.

Julian didn’t want that.

He had to get out of here as fast as possible.

And Rehul, she just breathed hardly, holding Julian very tight, so tight that even though Julian let off her, she wouldn’t fall.

Julian looked down again. The line was spreading even more rapidly.

Now this line was one, at the middle, was literally dividing the planet, and the force of all this was reeling Julian slightly in the air.

The planet had fallen. Everything on it was down. Except them, who was who was up.

And by up, it was likely they would be down any moment now.

The ’ranting’ man must have been joking.

Julian remembered him saying that he would have survived with the quaking device.

Well, that quaking device would have sunk he and the petite lady instantly once they used it.

’[Thinking about it now,]’ Xea came up. ’[This is all your fault.]’

"How?" Julian asked, surprised.

’[When you were about to power the device, how many Exoin fragments were required?]’

Julian shrugged.

"Nothing was asked."

’[You know, I told you to use the Exoin fragments, but I didn’t tell you how many to use.]’

"How many was I to use?"

’[Three should have done it.]’

Julian cursed under his breath.

"Damn!"

’[How many did you use?]’

"Twelve."

Xea went insane.

"Twelve. No wonder! Three should have done it. Or even two, since they would have fell, giving a chance to run. The fall would make them dizzy or weak to stand up for about five minutes, and that should give you enough time to plunge you out of here."

"I wanted them to die. What would I gain by letting them just fall, be dizzy, and then weak?"

’[Your life and that of the large-breasted woman in your hands.]’

Why did it have to use: ’large-breasted’?

Julian shook his head sideways.

He would do this. He was going to get out of here alive. He would plunge with speed similitude to lightning and get out of here.

Nothing would stop him, not even the wind...

"So this floating planet means that it’s made up of floating planets?" he asked Xea.

At that point, with the speed he was going, no one could hear his voice apart from Xea.

The wind was hitting his face so hard, if it wasn’t for the helmet he was wearing, it would have been torn.

Rehul wasn’t too affected. She was resting her face on his body. Even though it was hard steel, she didn’t mind, as far as it protected her from the fierce wind.

’[Yes. Just two, actually. This we are in, and the next one facing us. It is divided. And I didn’t know you were this crazy. That was why I said you should try and be there in two days.]’

Julian grinned under his helmet.

"I had calculated the time you would take and avoid the steel monsters. I know you can fly, but I didn’t factor that to give you an upper hand because the majority of the steel monsters can also fly. But now, you’ve, through the quaking device, killed them all."

Julian brightened up with that.

"So I would be there faster?"

The device was affirmative. ’[Yes, only if you can survive this. If you do, in some minutes, you should be there. Not many people make it alive to the other land of this planet, you know, so if you can, you’ll certainly get to the Wall Galaxy.]’

Julian was bolstered by that, and if there was anything that kept him going at this point, it was simply the thought of gutting out the ribs of the commander who murdered Luiin.

That kept him going.

He zoomed.

This part of the planet was slowly falling.

All the caves were divided, the monsters nowhere to be found.

Julian, the fear of not wanting to die rooted in his mind, flew so fast, if one looked at him, would catch just a twink of his body just for half a blink.

Julian could see the place that split the planet. He was almost there...
