Chapter 290 -290: Urgent Mission (Requesting Monthly Pass)
Black Golden Cat?!
That’s a color pattern only found over by the Grand Canyon, how did it end up here?
Could it really be coming for him? Was he that famous?
The Black Gold Cat quickly leaped down from the tree and approached Chen Ying, “Two-legged beast, give me a chance?”
“What chance? What do you want to do?”
“I don’t want to do anything, just want a chance to introduce us, you know? She’s so beautiful, and I’m so handsome; our kids would definitely be beautiful and handsome too.”
Where did this mongrel come from? Drag it out and bury it!
The Black Gold Cat wasn’t actually entirely black.
Like the Black Panther, you could see patterns on its body, only the color was too deep to be seen clearly in poor light.
There’s also a type with a black base and golden spots, which the locals call the Mahua Cat, seemingly the offspring of the Golden Cat and the Black Golden Cat.
Chen Ying thought for a moment, then took the Black Gold Cat to find the Golden Cat Lady.
He didn’t truly intend to introduce the Black Gold Cat to her as a mate. Honestly, despite the Black Gold Cat’s strong capabilities, its temperament was too sleazy, not even a match for the Golden Cat Lady’s foot hair.
The female felines, who were at the tea party exchanging parenting tips, turned their heads upon seeing Chen Ying return with a peculiar-looking guy in tow.
“I, uh, it wants to get familiar with the environment. I have some work to do, so you guys chat with it.”
Faced with the Golden Cat Lady, he could not bring himself to say the words “blind date” and simply used work as an excuse to flee.
Leopard Sister knew him too well, she scoffed softly and gave a side-eye to Chen Ying’s hasty retreat.
Anyway, this black guy wasn’t here for her, so she just watched the drama, ate melon seeds, and stayed alert.
Lady Tiger had already lain down next to the children, snacking on melon seeds without letting her guard down.
Meanwhile, Jinya, who was chatting with the Golden Cat Lady, glanced at the Black Gold Cat, then at Little Jin.
“How much sun did this guy soak up to turn so dark? Do you want to come with me to the mountain to live for a while, see if you can lighten up a bit?”
Her gaze held a touch of sympathy, causing the Black Gold Cat to roll its eyes and swallow the curse that had reached its throat.
Although Chen Ying had run off, he stopped after a distance and pricked up his ears to listen for a few minutes, only relaxing when he was sure he heard no roars from the group.
Those fellows were each rather fierce in battle; if a fight broke out, the Black Gold Cat would definitely end up being the one thrashed.
He wasn’t too worried about the safety of the kids; with Lady Tiger, Leopard Sister plus Jinya and Little Jin around, even a rowdy fight between the two Golden Cats wouldn’t impact the babies.
But still, he felt a little bad for the Golden Cat Lady.
After escaping the large-scale feline team building event, he returned to the monitoring station to find Ying Bo helping move items.
They had just received today’s supply shipment, which they’d have to rely on for the next half month.
“Mr. Chen, we’re having pan-fried egg noodles for dinner, do you want to add some leafy greens?”
The leafy greens that came with the supply shipment were the durable kind, like Chinese cabbage and round cabbage; the mess hall chef simply planted a row behind the house using the foam boxes the supplies came in.
Scallions, ginger, garlic sprouts were essential, hot peppers and tomatoes were also planted, plus six boxes dedicated to bok choy and Shanghai green.
“Today, we can just pick some more. The next harvest will have to wait at least three days. Later on, as the weather gets colder, it will take even longer. I’m considering asking someone to bring some PVC pipes so we can build a vertical vegetable rack ourselves, to be placed next to the kitchen warehouse without taking up space.”
The vertical plant rack had another advantage: ease of mobility.
Place it indoors when it gets cold, outside when it’s nice, and if there was no space inside, just build a frame out of bamboo and drape waterproof cloth over it to make a greenhouse.
Put a water heater inside and you’re set.
Chen Ying listened to the chef for a while and had a thought: the vertical plant rack might come in handy for the Unfrozen River Protection Station and the River Source Protection Station.
They had greenhouses there too, but they were small, and due to the large number of people and heavy workload, maintaining them was an issue.
It was manageable in the summer with family members helping, but come winter, the problem became more apparent.
During the meal, Chen Ying made a video call to Yin Li to discuss the situation there, mainly to find out how the Little Lynx was doing.
Hearing that Little Lynx was doing quite well, Chen Ying felt slightly relieved.
Discussing the greenhouse and vegetable growing, Yin Li chuckled and, carrying his phone, ran to the side; after a few minutes, a brand-new mobile panel house appeared in his view.
“What’s that?”
“The families of those three rescued college students donated it. It wasn’t entirely their own money; it seems they made a targeted donation through some foundation. For details, you’d have to ask Duanmu.”
Having not been online for a while, his phone nearly froze when he finally logged into the small group.
He scrolled from start to finish, Duanmu didn’t explain the origins of the greenhouse very clearly, but it was pretty much confirmed to be a donation organized by the parents of the two college students.
As for why Yin Li mentioned three students, another girl’s parents sought out the families of the two affected students to plead, and after some negotiation, the parents made a donation to the foundation, obtaining the students’ letters of forgiveness.
As for Blue haired, she’s now pedaling a sewing machine by day and crying behind bars at night.
Although it was the parents who arranged the donation, all four unmanned conservation stations received one, evenly distributed.
Chen Ying posted a few photos and videos in the group, and before he could speak, Xiao Song’s call came through.
“Brother Ying, I’ve sent the latest medical report for Little Lynx to your email. The situation is a bit better than we thought. If we can maintain this level, surgery might not be necessary.”
Not needing surgery was the best outcome.
Every creature’s heart and brain are the most crucial organs; unless absolutely necessary, it’s best to avoid surgery.
Xiao Song had sent several other cases, most of which were related to orthopedics.
Without a choice, in the wilderness, grasslands, and mountain areas, animals either get bitten to death or hurt their bones while fleeing and wait to die.
Those lucky enough to be rescued were a very small part.
“When will you come over, Brother Ying? The last time I went out with the patrol officer, we found a den of tiger marmots; they were incredibly efficient at rooting out rat nests.”
Xiao Song wanted to find Chen Ying’s help to move the den of tiger marmots.
“The rodent problem at the Protection Station here is too severe. My lab almost got wrecked last time.”
The house cats can’t win against the rats, which is very frustrating.
“What about those desert cats?”
“Ah, because some people made frivolous comments, the larger two were sent away, saying that they would be released into the wild once trained to hunt. The current ones are still small, feeding on milk every day; how can they catch any mice?”
Chen Ying laughed and promised her that after setting everything up on his end, he would hurry over.
He had just hung up the phone when he saw Dao Meihua sitting opposite him, watching him.
“When did you get here?”
Chen Ying asked in surprise and glanced around; everyone seemed not at all surprised by her arrival.
“I just arrived, delivering a batch of experimental supplies. I also came to take you back. Professor Bai mentioned it to you before, didn’t he? Someone wants to ask you to make a house call.”
He had mentioned it, but Chen Ying didn’t take it seriously.
His skills might rank among the first batch of young doctors in China, but overseas, he had no reputation at all. Why would they invite him?
“It’s from ‘Panthera,’ a wild felid conservation organization that exchanges technical information with our domestic M alliance. They’ve sent a request for assistance.”
Dao Meihua’s expression was a bit grave as she took out a tablet and handed it to Chen Ying.
“Professor Careyes is currently undertaking a conservation research project on West African lions. A little issue has come up with the lion pride she is observing, and she needs your assistance.”
(It feels like a vagrant)
Chen Ying stared blankly at Dao Meihua.
Neither his academic nor his professional life had ever involved lions.
There were no big cats like lions in China, so how could he offer any assistance?
“I’ll explain the details on the way. We need to leave now.”
Dao Meihua stood up, picked up her backpack, and urged him with her eyes to pack his bags quickly.
“Hold on, you’ve got to give me some time. I need to settle things with Jinya and the others, and I haven’t been back to the emergency station for a long time. My clothes…”
“Sorry, we really don’t have much time. It would take at least two days to go back and forth to the emergency station at the fastest speed. There are two experts traveling with us, and the flight time has already been set; we can’t change it. The leadership said that unless you hadn’t left the mountains, you’d have to participate in the mission no matter what.”
Chen Ying frowned as he was about to speak when Dao Meihua’s phone rang. After she answered, her expression immediately tightened.
“Sorry, Mr. Chen, we initially coordinated an international flight here. But we just happened to meet a big boss who’s going to West Africa for business talks. After department coordination, he agreed to take our experts over there. Because his business negotiation is very critical and time-sensitive, we must reach the provincial capital’s airport within four hours.”
“It’s really too late for you to go back and say goodbye to the animals. The helicopter to pick you up will arrive shortly. Why don’t you say farewell to Leopard Sister and the others first, and after I take you to the airport, I will return to the emergency station. Don’t worry about the work here.”
Is this not some kind of international joke?
From Dao Meihua’s grave and urging expression, Chen Ying seemed to grasp something.
“No problem, I’ll be right back.”
He said and then sprinted into the forest.
There was a strange atmosphere in the forest, but Chen Ying had no time to inquire.
He rushed over to Leopard Sister, casually encircling Jinya’s neck.
“Leopard Sister, Jinya, I need to leave immediately due to some urgent matters, and I don’t know when I’ll be back. Please help me keep an eye on the emergency station.”
He looked back at the Golden Cat Lady squatting nearby, “Previously, Great Bai and Jiaojiao temporarily occupied a territory, but there’s still a male bear over there. Golden Cat knows the place; sorry for troubling you to check on it occasionally.”
Chen Ying then squatted in front of the Golden Cat.
“I’m sorry, I have to break my promise. Animals from another place are waiting for my help, and the situation is dire. I must leave immediately.”
Golden Cat looked at him earnestly and meowed softly.
“Go on, I can manage on my own.”
“Me too, I can keep it company,” Jinya joined in. “I can let it sleep in my den.”
Chen Ying rubbed Jinya’s head.
It wasn’t that he was biased; who wouldn’t love such a warm and cozy big cat like Jinya?
Without the luxury of time to say more, Chen Ying sprinted back.
Golden Cat gave Black Golden Cat a cold glance, then strutted into the forest.
“Since the two-legged beast has left, I shall stay here temporarily and wait for him.”
It had no overlap with Lady Tiger’s menu, so they could coexist peacefully.
As for Black Gold, if it dared to steal its food, it would have to brace for sharp claws!
Meanwhile, Chen Ying had just finished packing his personal items when he heard the sound of a helicopter landing.
