Country Weapon-Chapter 35
Chapter 35 - 35
A rooster's crow heralded the arrival of a new day.
Wei Wenwu rose early, tidied himself up, and pulled out a white shirt from the bottom of his chest, carefully preserved. He thought about pairing it with a tie, but after rummaging through the cabinet, he only found a red scarf his son had left behind years ago.
"Woof, woof, woof!" The big yellow dog at the door barked twice, wagging its tail and grinning at Wei Wenwu.
Wei Wenwu smoothed the wrinkles on his shirt, stuffed his hands into his pockets, and snapped, "What're you barking for? Horny for Xiaohua again?"
With that, he strode off with purposeful steps.
"Hey, isn't that Sister Lijuan? And Sanshui's here too?" As he locked the gate, two figures approached—Shen Lijuan and Li Sanshui.
Wei Wenwu flashed a forced smile, greeting them. His eyes drifted to the full curves straining against Shen Lijuan's blouse.
They say a widow's door attracts trouble, but Shen Lijuan had avoided gossip. Not because men didn't come around—she ran the village store, so men were always there. Plus, she lived under the same roof as a man, eating and sleeping side by side. Yet, no one had ever claimed to have climbed into her bed.
But times had changed. Shen Lijuan was at his door now. Having been village chief for years, Wei Wenwu had enough cunning to guess why.
"Village chief, heading out? Off to the hospital to see Chen Tianming?" Shen Lijuan gave a faint smile, her oval face revealing two shallow dimples.
Wearing a floral silk blouse and simple cropped pants, her slender, pale legs gleamed like a vibrant peony, tempting enough to take a bite.
But Wei Wenwu had no such thoughts now. He was stunned. How did she know he was going to visit Chen Tianming?
Yesterday, the village's top dog, Chen Tianming, had both legs broken and was sent to the hospital. Wei Wenwu, an outsider with no local kin, knew the village's clannish ways. Despite their rough manners, villagers stuck together. The two biggest clans were the Chens, led by Chen Tianming, and the Lis, led by Li Sanshui.
Chen Tianming had been the village secretary for five years, wielding unchallenged power. The Li family wasn't far behind—Li Sanshui was a simple, unremarkable man, but his brother, Li Sanchou, was a sharp accountant with a shiny bald head, a symbol of his "brilliant" mind, serving as the village bookkeeper for a decade.
Wei Wenwu, the outsider, had no real backing. His orders were ignored, his plans mocked, and his ideas died before they could take root. Frustrated, he'd learned to keep a low profile, playing the peacemaker with a smile, doing his duty without stirring trouble.
Now, with that fool Long Gen breaking Chen Tianming's legs, Wei Wenwu was on his way to the hospital with two thousand yuan tucked in his pocket. But how did Shen Lijuan know? Was this woman a fortune-teller? Looking at her again, beyond her beauty, he sensed a hint of cunning.
"Village chief, this isn't your usual style, chatting at the gate in this heat..." Seeing Wei Wenwu's stunned hesitation, Shen Lijuan couldn't help but marvel at Little Long's foresight. How did he predict this?
"Come in, come in, sit down."
Wei Wenwu tempered his edge, but his mind wasn't rusty. He was a sly fox, cautious and calculated.
Two cups of water sat on the table, but Shen Lijuan didn't touch hers. Little Long's plan last night sounded good, but she'd never done anything like this. Would it work? As soon as she sat, she couldn't hold back.
"Village chief, I'm a straightforward woman, no games, always direct—everyone in the village knows that." Shen Lijuan shifted, pointing to Li Sanshui beside her. "This morning, I went straight to Brother Sanshui. You're one of the village's sharpest minds, village chief. You know why I'm here."
Wei Wenwu smiled, saying nothing.
"My nephew Little Long got struck by lightning. Yesterday morning, the village secretary forced him to work on the road. I tried to stop it, but he went. He's not right in the head, and somehow, he ended up injuring the village secretary!"
Shen Lijuan's face showed worry and distress, her voice heavy with sorrow.
"The village secretary's injury breaks my heart too. When his brother Chen Tianyun came by, I gave him five thousand yuan. Then, before dinner, he came again and took another four thousand! Chief, you know I run a small store. If this keeps up, I'll have to sell myself!"
"No, no, it won't come to that," Wei Wenwu said, waving his hand dismissively.
"Hmph! Not come to that?"
Shen Lijuan's expression turned cold, her voice sharp. "Don't I know what the Chen family is like? Don't you know, village chief?"
They bullied, extorted, abused power, and won people over with dirty tricks!
"Village chief, can you stomach Chen Tianming's crimes?" Seeing Wei Wenwu's noncommittal smile, neither yielding nor resisting, Shen Lijuan kicked the ball back to him.
"Little Long's not right in the head—he's not at fault. I know Chen Tianming wanted to teach him a lesson, making him carry stones. But the wicked get their due. Little Long's fine, but Chen Tianming lost both legs—that's fate! Village chief, the law says a fool's mistakes aren't held accountable, but covering up Chen Tianming's crimes? That's aiding and abetting..."
Shen Lijuan watched Wei Wenwu's face closely. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead—she knew he was scared.
People love to stay out of trouble, keeping their hands clean. But drag them into the mess, and they panic.
Little Long was right again! Shen Lijuan felt confident.
"Chief," Li Sanshui coughed, his brows furrowed with gravity. "This morning, Sister Lijuan came to me about this. I say, Little Long's got a screw loose, but the village secretary's not crazy, right? Forcing a fool to haul stones—what's that about?"
"No beating around the bush. I talked to Sanchou privately. Chen Tianming's been skimming village funds for years—road maintenance fees, farm subsidies, all swallowed up! This can't just slide. Chief, you're the biggest official now. You've got to stand up for us!"
Wei Wenwu hesitated, weighing the stakes.
He knew Chen Tianming's crimes inside out, but could he really take him down?
"Chief, the township chief's inspection is coming up in a couple of days. If you don't act, I might not keep my mouth shut..." Shen Lijuan sipped her water, her voice soft as a mosquito's hum, but it hit Wei Wenwu like a thunderbolt.
She was threatening him!
"Fine, I'm in! Tell me, what's the plan?" Wei Wenwu gritted his teeth, stomping his foot, his resolve hardened.
Shen Lijuan sighed in relief, her heart finally at ease. She was in awe of Little Long. How was this fool so clever? A simple woman like her, who rarely stepped out, had just strong-armed the village chief into submission.
Oh, right—this was Little Long's using strength to strike strength...
