Chapter 88: You Are The Only Woman I Ever Asked To Marry
Abigail couldn’t agree more; she was hungry but lacked the energy to prepare a meal at home. Earlier, she had planned to eat whatever food was in her fridge, bathe, and then sleep.
But now, with Sawyer here, her plans have changed.
Her exhaustion slowly faded, making it difficult for her to refuse his invitation to dinner at a restaurant. The idea of eating out sounded fancy to her—something she hadn’t done in the past few months while she was still with Ryland.
In the months leading up to their breakup, they mainly dined at home, or Ryland would be out late, only returning in the middle of the night. During that time, she suspected he had started cheating on her, possibly seeing her slutty sister outside.
"Okay, but I’m clueless about the good and nice restaurants around this area," Abigail responded honestly. Despite living in the capital for a few years, she didn’t have the chance to explore the local dining scene in this area.
Hearing her answer, Sawyer smiled; instantly, he felt in a good mood. He immediately started the car engine and drove out of the parking area.
"But Sawyer, I’m not sure the restaurants are open now. It’s past nine..." She hesitated, worried about suggesting they eat at a street stall.
"I know a quiet, nice place that’s still open. While I waited for you earlier, I made a reservation there, so we can go now," he replied confidently.
Abigail said nothing but nodded in agreement. Then, she turned to see him as the car headed toward Main Street, opposite the road leading to her house.
She was about to ask where they were going. However, before she could speak, Sawyer said, "Abby, I got you a latte..." He took a cup from the holder and offered it to her. "I ordered a sweet latte because I know you’d like it."
"Thank you, Sawyer. You’re so nice to remember, my favorite," Abigail chuckled while sipping the latte she made herself.
"You’re welcome." He smiled, pleased to see Abigail enjoying her drink.
After sipping her latte a few times, Abigail remembered Tanya, who was heartbroken after hearing Sawyer’s rejection.
"I heard from a friend that you’re already married. My friend also said your wife would be angry if she knew you spoke to another woman."
Abigail paused when she saw him press his lips together, holding back an awkward smile.
"Weren’t you afraid your wife might divorce you if she found out you bought another woman a latte and even gave her a ride?" Abigail added, teasing him.
A silence fell between them as Sawyer didn’t respond. She waited for his reply, but he kept his mouth tightly shut and focused on the street ahead, pretending he hadn’t heard her.
"Oh no, Sawyer, if your wife found out about me, she might beat me, right?" she continued playfully, stifling a laugh as she watched his tense expression.
When Abigail decided to stop teasing Sawyer and let him drive safely, his words soon shocked her.
"Oh, come on, Abby, how could you beat yourself up? You are my wife..." Sawyer glanced at her, hoping to catch a glimpse of her expression.
A smile spread across his lips when he saw her turn her face toward the window as if trying to hide her feelings from him.
The car fell silent once again.
After a few more minutes, Sawyer began to worry that Abigail might give him the silent treatment. ’Is she angry?’ he wondered.
"Abby, are you angry that I called you my wife?" he asked worriedly.
Abigail took a deep, silent breath upon hearing his question.
’How am I supposed to answer that?’ She thought.
She wanted to express her feelings but was wary of falling for his tricks again. Instead, she decided it was better to remain silent. She continued staring at the street.
"Are you not angry but just shy? Is that it?"
Abigail was left speechless. She turned to look at him with annoyance, but Sawyer didn’t notice as he was focused on the road ahead.
Finally, with a faint smile, Abigail expressed what she had wanted to say earlier: "Sawyer Jones, I’m not shy. I’m angry!"
Sawyer was surprised to hear that. He held tightly to the steering wheel and glanced at her.
"I’m sorry, Abby. I promise I won’t make fun of addressing you like that until you officially accept me." He hurriedly corrected himself.
"Sawyer, I’m not angry about that. But I’m angry because you don’t seem serious about asking me to marry you," Abigail explained, staring at him with mixed emotions.
Abigail still couldn’t believe she had managed to say those words—worried he would twist them again. However, she couldn’t back out now, as Sawyer seemed to understand her clearly.
"How can you say that I’m not serious? I’m serious about this, Abby. I’m serious about it every time..." Sawyer insisted, trying to convince her with his honest response. Still, he noticed her sigh, clearly expressing her disappointment.
Abigail was at a loss for words. It seemed that Sawyer didn’t understand the meaning of her words.
"Have you ever proposed to a girl before, Sawyer?" she asked.
Abigail doesn’t enjoy proposal events like the ones she typically sees on her Instagram timeline. However, she believes that if a man is going to ask a girl to marry him, he should at least do it properly and romantically.
On the other hand, Sawyer frequently asks her to marry him. And every time, he asked in a casual manner, almost as if he was inviting her out on a date.
...
Sawyer was silent for a moment after hearing Abigail’s question.
As he remembered, when he was young, he only asked Serena to be his girlfriend but never proposed to her.
"In my teenage years, I asked a girl to be my girlfriend, but I never asked her to marry me," Sawyer finally answered. "You are the only woman I ever asked to marry. Does that count?"
