Baby Serendipity: The Whole World Fell In Love With Me-Chapter 588 - 587: Is the Animal World So Fascinating?
Chapter 588: Chapter 587: Is the Animal World So Fascinating?
The zookeeper nanny heard what Mianmian said, feeling very upset.
Bao Lan was the little bear he had raised by hand; he loved Bao Lan dearly, and Bao Lan was fond of him too.
He also knew that Bao Lan would not harm the little birds, but his boss had insisted he shoo away all the small birds around Bao Lan. God forbid Bao Lan accidentally killed one—the zoo’s top attraction might collapse in the public eye.
Without Bao Lan, the zoo’s visitor numbers would plummet; how then would they generate revenue?
But he couldn’t reveal such thoughts in front of his superiors. If the boss took note of him, he might find an excuse to fire him, and then he’d never see Bao Lan again, would he?
The keeper, with worries he couldn’t voice, could only agree with Mianmian in front of the camera: "Little Auntie’s right. I’ll try to respect Bao Lan’s wishes going forward, try not to obstruct him from playing with the little birds, and not let Bao Lan be sad."
The zookeeper spoke with a hint of bitterness.
Bao Lan was just a bear, and it was already impressive that it understood human language, which was more than what most bears could do. To discern whether the humans speaking were happy or unhappy was too difficult, something Bao Lan was not capable of.
So, after hearing that the keeper would allow it to play with the small birds, Bao Lan was so happy it tumbled and rolled before entering its activity field.
There were many toys in the activity field and also special feeders to hide food, challenging the pandas to get the food out by themselves.
Bao Lan headed straight for one of the feeders, which allowed only one bear paw to reach in for the food, and started calling out to it.
This feeder was fixed atop some climbing frames.
Mianmian climbed up swiftly, peering inside it.
Immediately, she spotted a swift lying in the corner.
The swift’s beady eyes looked utterly panicked. It watched Mianmian for a long time before suddenly chirping and moving towards her.
Mianmian held out her hand and cradled the swift.
Seeing the swift, Bao Lan was overjoyed, grinning broadly and nodding its head in satisfaction.
The swift was injured, suffering a wing fracture. It was also clearly ill, its neck retracted, looking very listless.
Mianmian stroked the swift’s head and took out a bamboo tube from her small bag, handing it to Bao Lan: "Bao Lan, Bao Lan, help me open this, okay? Just pull this string!"
Bao Lan tilted its head and sat on the ground, carefully pinching the string.
The string was too fine, Bao Lan was struggling to grip it, its bear eyes squinted in concentration.
Yang Xian knew a bit about filming and held his mobile phone close to Bao Lan. He tried to capture Bao Lan’s adorable expressions, hoping to please the live broadcast room audience.
When Bao Lan saw Yang Xian, it sniffed to confirm that he carried Mianmian’s scent before relaxing and continued pulling on the bamboo tube.
After fumbling around, it finally grasped the thin string firmly and opened the tube.
Mianmian extended her hand: "Pour a pill into my hand, please."
Bao Lan was curiously sniffing the scent of the medicine in the tube. Upon hearing her, it thought for a moment before tilting the tube towards Mianmian’s hand.
Several pills rolled onto Mianmian’s palm.
Seeing too many pills had poured out, Bao Lan quickly retrieved the tube.
[Ah, our Bao Lan hasn’t been playing with those toys for nothing, it’s so intelligent.]
[Haha, Bao Lan is really something, smarter than the other giant pandas.]
[I still really want to go see it in person, but who’s doing the filming? Getting so close and yet not disliked by Bao Lan.]
Mianmian put the excess pills back into the tube and took the remaining one, feeding it into the swift’s mouth.
The swift swallowed it, and in no time at all, the bird seemed much more spirited. It chirped and chattered to Mianmian, telling her how its wing got fractured.
Mianmian listened, feeling deeply sympathetic toward the swift.
It turned out that the swift also liked Prince. It had always been by Prince’s side, playing with him. Engaged in play, it had forgotten about the time for migration. When it decided to migrate, it happened to hit a smoggy day.
Unable to see clearly, the swift crashed into a tree and fractured its wing.
After breaking a bone, small animals typically awaited death.
But this swift was lucky; it landed in Bao Lan’s activity area. Bao Lan kept it hidden, secretly feeding it, slowly nursing it back to health. However, that was already two or three months ago. Although its wing bone had healed, it was crooked, leaving it unable to fly.
Feeling like a useless bird, the swift tried to leave Bao Lan’s protection, to live or die on its own.
But Bao Lan kept protecting it, being very careful not to let the keepers or zoo visitors find out. The swift couldn’t die if it wanted to, nor could it fly; and missing Prince, it slowly fell ill.
After the swift finished telling its tale, Mianmian asked if it was okay to let others know. Only when the swift nodded did she share the story with the live broadcast room audience who were waiting for the truth.
[My goodness, is the animal world this exciting? To think there’s such a dramatic story.]
[I remember a story about a Prince statue I saw when I was little, where there was also a swift that did not migrate, and eventually it lost its life alongside the statue...]
[I’m worried about Prince now; the swift was saved by Bao Lan. Will it grow to like Bao Lan more from now on?]
Mianmian, unable to see the discussion in the live broadcast room, was seeking the swift’s opinion: "You can continue to live like this, and Mianmian can take you to Prince. I’ll try to make sure you can stay with Prince, but you still won’t be able to fly. If you want to fly again, then, then we’d have to break that wing of yours again so it can heal properly!"
Like humans, if an animal’s bones heal incorrectly, they need to be re-broken and set right. If the swift wanted to fly again, it would have to endure the pain of a broken bone once more.
When the swift heard that it could be with Prince and fly again, it chirped ecstatically with its head tilted back and eyes closed.
Mianmian became the little translator once more: "Oh, you’re saying you want to be with Prince and you want your wing to heal properly, too! No problem, Mianmian can help you!"
Bao Lan nearby hummed softly, seeming exceptionally happy as well. It looked like it wanted to touch the swift but was afraid of hurting it.
Sensing Bao Lan’s wish to touch it, the swift willingly moved its head under Bao Lan’s paw. The bond between the bear and the bird was excellent, creating a scene of harmony and happiness.
Once the swift had warmed up to Bao Lan enough, Mianmian proposed taking it to meet Prince.
If she didn’t go now, Prince might become anxious waiting!
As soon as Mianmian said this, a management staff member quickly agreed, "Little Auntie, you can take Bao Lan out, with special permission. We’ll go with you to find Prince!"
With Bao Lan being so well-behaved in front of Little Auntie and the live broadcast room audience enjoying the moment, they had to fully capitalize on the viewership it brought. Only then would they be justifying their roles!
